Verba is a language app that runs on your device. There is no account and no sign-in, and we do not sell personal information. The free app shows an occasional sponsored ticket, provided by Google AdMob; what that involves is set out below.

WHAT STAYS ON YOUR DEVICE

Your progress — the journeys you have taken, the phrases you have met and how well you know them, your streak, your settings and your saved tickets — is stored on your device. Your level and your streak are also kept in your own iCloud account, so they follow you to a new iPhone or iPad. What Selene remembers of your conversations is worked out on your device and stays there; it fades after a month. We cannot read any of it.

SPEAKING AND LISTENING

When you talk to the app, your speech is turned into text by Apple's speech recognition, in Italian, English and the language Selene is talking to you in (your phone's, or one you pick): on your device where it has the language, otherwise by Apple's speech service, which returns the text and does not keep your audio. Audio is never recorded, kept or sent to us. Selene is an AI: her replies are written on your device, by Apple's on-device model where your iPhone or iPad has Apple Intelligence, and from a written script where it does not. If you choose her natural voice (the app asks the first time you talk to her, and it can be changed in Settings), the text of her line — which may repeat something you told her — and the name of the language she is speaking besides Italian are sent through our server to OpenAI's text-to-speech service, which returns the audio. We do not store those lines, and OpenAI does not use them to train its models. With the natural voice off, your phone reads her lines itself.

WHAT LEAVES YOUR DEVICE

  • The weather shown in the station comes from Apple Weather for a fixed location in Florence. Your own location is never requested or used.
  • If you are signed in to Game Center, your kilometres this week and your longest streak are sent to Apple's Game Center and shown on its leaderboards under your Game Center nickname, and other players' nicknames appear on the station's board. You can sign out of Game Center, or limit who sees your profile, in your device's Settings.
  • Apple may collect crash and performance data if you have agreed to share it with developers. It reaches us aggregated and anonymous.
  • Sponsored tickets come from Google AdMob. To choose and measure an ad, Google's software may collect device and usage information such as an advertising identifier (only if you allow tracking — Verba never asks, so it is not shared), your approximate location from your IP address, and how you interact with the ad. Verba asks Google for non-personalised ads only, limited to content rated for teenagers, with alcohol, gambling, dating and other sensitive categories blocked.   • RevenueCat, which measures the sponsored tickets, records anonymous ad events so the app can be kept free. It holds no name or contact details.
  • If you report a sponsored ticket or one of Selene's lines, your mail app opens with a message to us containing only that ad or line; it is sent only if you send it.
  • If you turn on the daily reminder, it is scheduled on your device; nothing is sent to us.

AGE

Verba is for teenagers and adults, and is rated 13+ on the App Store: its phrases include ordering a glass of wine or a beer, as a traveller in Italy would. It is not designed for children. The app keeps no account and asks no one for personal information. Sponsored tickets are non-personalised and limited to content rated for teenagers, and the app never asks permission to track.

DELETING YOUR DATA

In the app, Settings › Delete my data deletes your journeys, level, streak, achievements and what Selene remembers, from your device and from your iCloud account. Deleting the app deletes what it stored on your device too. Your Game Center scores are kept by Apple and are managed in your device's Settings under Game Center. Anything else, write to us and we will help.

CHANGES

If this policy changes, the date above changes with it, and a material change will be announced in the app.
